Tackle it Tuesday - Halloween costume

Tackle It Tuesday Meme

This week has been busy, to say the least, with looking for a job, I'm really trying to organize around here, but this week has been spent making Kid Jedi's costume. For Halloween, he'll be...a Jedi, Luke Skywalker to be specific. We went and looked at the costumes they were selling, and I didn't like them. I couldn't justify spending $40 for a costume made of cheap polyester when I could make it myself. So for $14, including the pattern, I made this.

The belt is a regular belt, it's a Pirates of the Caribbean Disney belt, but it's what he wanted to wear (and we already had it). This is Kid Jedi after Trick or Treating at Adventure Aquarium, they do a free trick or treat night (2 actually) each year for passholders.

Tackle It Tuesday - More baby gifts *Updated with pictures*

Tackle It Tuesday Meme

Well, now that I'm home from the free movie at our local United Artist Theater, I'm ready to finish my tackle. My Mom has a baby shower for a friend this weekend and she asked me to make some burpies, I usually make the ones made out of diapers with flannel down the middle and ribbon on either side of the fabric, and I am making them, but I got a pattern from YouCanMakeThis.com for a receiving blanket and one for burpies and I'm making them. Last night I cut everything out and pinned it up, today it will be sewing. Come by tomorrow to check out my pictures of the finished product.

****Update - Pictures****

This is everything I made: 4 burpies in 2 different styles, 1 receiving blanket:

This is the receiving blanket:
These are the burpies I usually make:

Tackle it Tuesday #24 - Giraffe Lovey finished

Tackle It Tuesday Meme

Well a few weeks ago, I had blogged that I intended to finish this lovey for my friend who was due June 23. Well this past Saturday, we were blessed to have a new little girl in this world. She was a few weeks early, but healthy. She's now home with her loving Mom, Dad and big brother. Anyway, I spent yesterday finishing the lovey.

It came together really quickly and I love the way it looks. I will definitely be looking at more sewing ideas from You Can Make This. As a matter of fact, my next sewing project is a handbag pattern I got from there.

This is what I'm tackling this week, let us know what you're tackling and check out more tackles at 5MFM.

Tackle It Tuesday #23 - Giraffe Lovey

Tackle It Tuesday Meme

This weeks tackle it is for a friend of mine who is due with baby #2 on June 23. I got this great pattern from You Can Make This and my kid Jedi picked out the giraffe lovey to make. So far, I've pieced the pattern together and laid out the pieces.

Today I will be cutting and, hopefully, sewing. You'll have to check back to see how it looks.

In the mean time, let us know what you're tackling and check out 5 Minutes for Mom to see what other Moms are tackling.

Tackle It Tuesday #5

WINTER HATS

That's my tackle. I love sewing and I usually make hats for my son. I didn't make any last year because the previous year's fit him but this year he needed new. I let him pick out the style and the color (red) but since he has a blue jacket, I gave him 2 choices for the contrasting color, both blues and he picked both so he got 2 hats, but he only let me take one picture. The other hat looks just like this one only it's red and solid navy blue.

I'm making gloves too, but they aren't done yet. At the rate I'm going that may be my Tackle for next week.

So, now it's you turn, head on over to 5 Minutes for Mom and add your tackle.

My Friday Adventure and what's kept me from here

Friday I made Mac and Cheese, you know the good stuff, the stuff that you make the sauce, bake it in the oven and it's full of gooey goodness.

Well, here are my ingredients

Whole wheat elbow noodles (cavatappi is good too), 3 Tbsp each butter and flour, 4 c soy milk, about a pound of cheese, now I usually use extra sharp cheddar, swiss, and some parmesan or provolone but I didn't have any so I used the Mexican shredded and parmesan that I had on hand.

The first thing you do is put water on for the noodles, you can actually put them in too, but I have a 4 yo who didn't want to leave his friend's house so I started the cheese sauce while the water was boiling.

For the sauce, the first thing is to make a roux, if you don't know what that is, you just melt the butter and flour together until it comes to a boil, you can let it cook until it's brown for a gumbo, but for something light like mac & cheese you just let it go until it starts to smell nutty.

I forgot to take a picture of the roux before I added the milk so this is what it looks like when I first put it in the pan. Next, you add the milk and bring it up to temperature, or if you're like me and realized you needed to switch burners for the water for the noodles, you turn the burner back on and hope for the best. Once the milk starts to bubble you add your cheese.

Once that melts, hopefully your noodles are cooked and you pour it over top of the noodles in a casserole dish, I think mine is 3 qts.

You bake it for about 20-25 minutes and ...

The verdict as usual was yummy for all, though the cheesy flavor was a little lacking since I used milder cheeses.

So, you may ask, if I did this on Friday why am I posting today, Tuesday? Well, my son started preschool yesterday and our preschool didn't tell you what you needed, but they sent out this cute little book that tells about a little girl starting school there, and in it she needs to bring a smock and a change of clothes, so I decided to pull out my sewing machine (which I have been itching to do) and make this...

This is what it looks like on...

So on Saturday and Sunday everyone had to fend for themselves, well we had leftover mac and cheese and nuggets (none for me) and yesterday we went to Chuck E Cheese after school and the little guy had nuggets, the big guy had a wrap, and I couldn't tell you what I had, I just went to bed at 9:00 and am still exhausted today, but that may have to do with having to run around Dick's today to get a soccer setup for this Saturday. I did bake some chocolate chip cookies today and will post that tonight.
